The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Institute of Child Health (ICH) is a tertiary-level critical care facility with a current capacity of 14 beds, designed to deliver advanced, high-acuity care to critically ill children. The unit is strategically structured to include 4 isolation beds, 4 general PICU beds, and 6 step-down beds, ensuring optimal patient segregation, infection control, and continuum of care.
Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, the PICU is supported by advanced mechanical ventilators, including High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) systems, along with Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and High-Flow Oxygen Therapy. The unit also features comprehensive patient monitoring systems, bedside hemostasis and Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis (SLED), as well as point-of-care ultrasound and echocardiography, enabling rapid diagnostics and real-time clinical decision-making. Advanced modalities such as Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) have also been incorporated, reflecting the unit’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies.
Established in 2011 as a 4-bedded unit, the PICU has evolved significantly over the past decade into a robust 14-bed facility, now supported by 9 mechanical ventilators and continuously upgraded equipment to meet modern critical care standards.
The unit is led by a team of dedicated full-time pediatric intensivists, with round-the-clock coverage provided by senior and junior residents, ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality care. Committed to delivering tertiary (Level III) care at an affordable cost, the PICU at ICH stands as a center of excellence, combining clinical expertise, technological advancement, and patient-centric care.
We follow a multidisciplinary model integrating pediatric intensivists, specialists, and emergency care teams to ensure rapid intervention and continuous monitoring.
