The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) is a pioneering center, having established the first dedicated pediatric rheumatology services in Eastern India in 2007. What began as a weekly specialized outpatient clinic has evolved into a comprehensive service with both outpatient care and a dedicated 6-bedded inpatient ward.
The department provides specialized evaluation and management for a broad spectrum of pediatric rheumatic and immune-mediated disorders, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Kawasaki disease, and other connective tissue diseases. It also serves as a referral center for complex cases such as fever of unknown origin and primary immunodeficiency disorders, offering advanced diagnostic and therapeutic expertise.
With a strong focus on academic excellence, the division has contributed extensively to national and international peer-reviewed journals, significantly advancing the understanding and management of pediatric rheumatologic conditions. Through its sustained clinical, research, and teaching initiatives, the department has played a key role in shaping and expanding this emerging subspecialty in India.
